ELIZABETH
STERLING
-
BA
(Indiana Univ.), MSW (Univ. of Denver).
Elizabeth is a human
rights advocate and grant writer with a Bachelors Degree in Sociology
from Indiana University, and a Masters Degree in Social Work from the
University of Denver in the United States. She became interested in
international human rights issues after volunteering as an English
teacher for young adults with disabilities in Nepal for six months, and
working with orphaned and pregnant young women in Peru.
As part of her Master’s degree, she participated in a class
on the subject of International Human Rights. Through this class, she
had an opportunity to travel to Kenya and assist in the creation of a
legal aid clinic for the disabled through the International Human Rights
and Advocacy Center. Her contribution included field research with
parents of individuals with mental disabilities to inform a needs
assessment for this group. The legal aid clinic is currently operating
in Nairobi.
She recently worked in fundraising for two human rights
organizations in Cameroon. She remains deeply committed to advocating
for marginalized groups and continues to assist in fundraising efforts
for organizations that protect and promote the rights of marginalized
groups. She volunteers with an organization focused on refugee
resettlement and for Human Rights Campaign, an American organization
promoting the rights of the LGBTQ population. In the future, she hopes
to earn a Masters’ degree in Journalism in order to continue increasing
awareness of issues faced by groups which are discriminated against.
