ROLAND
KUM FANG
– LLB Hons (Buea).
Roland is a Democracy and Human Rights advocate with a
special interest in civic engagement, election participation, and good
governance. He is holder of a Bachelors Degree in Political Science and
Public Administration from the University of Buea, Cameroon. He also
holds certificates in courses on Negotiations and Conflict Resolution,
Democracy, Governance and Elections, and Field Security.
Roland’s interest in democracy and elections dates back to
his university days when he served as an election observer with NEO. He
believes that greater civic awareness and civic participation is the
appropriate therapy for Cameroon’s current political and social decay.
To him, a strong and apolitical civil society is more legitimate in
objectively monitoring, questioning, and criticizing the actions and
performance of the country’s political leadership.
His most recent international experiences includes his
participation in the 2010 legislative and executive elections in Sudan
where he served as a United Nations Public Outreach Technical Adviser to
Sudan’s National Elections Commission’s State High Committee for the
Northern State. Roland also worked as the United Nations External
Relations Technical Adviser to the Southern Sudan Referendum Bureau in
Juba. In this capacity, he was greatly involved with the Southern Sudan
Referendum which led to the democratic creation of the world’s newest
country – the Republic of South Sudan.
During his years of abroad, Roland also worked in
partnership with other international organizations like the European
Union, International Foundation for Electoral Systems, National
Democratic Institute, and the Carter Center Observation Missions in
designing and implementing capacity building programs for local civil
society organizations.
