DEMOCRACY AND GOOD GOVERNANCE

“Democracy is an objective. Democratization is a process. Democratization serves the cause of peace because it offers the possibility of justice and of progressive change without force” -  Boutros Boutros-Ghali

The Democracy and Good Governance project supports our Democracy, good governance, and public accountability programs. It seeks to address the country’s democratic deficiencies and the core concerns associated with the crisis of governance in Cameroon. The major aspects of this project include rule of law, separation of powers, accountability in government, democratic participation, and anticorruption.

This project is built against the backdrop of the absence of accountability and probity in government operations, the pervasiveness of corruption, and the absence of transparent, free, and fair elections in Cameroon. CCDHR recognizes that democratic governance requires appropriate observation of certain fundamental norms which are currently absent in Cameroon.

The elections component of this project seeks to make persistent demands for the creation of a sound Independent Electoral Commission trustworthy to handle electoral matters in Cameroon. The current situation is awful as people have over the years, become increasing frustrated with the system, have completely lost fate in the country, and have resigned to faith by abstaining from participating in electoral processes. Elections constitute the basis of democracy, and democracy sustains open societies, without which there can be no genuine social stability or development.

CCDHR continuously advocates for democratic and good governance principles and other pertinent reforms on the belief that these are essential for the fulfillment of individual and collective aspirations, the articulation of national interests, and the nurturing of a strong and effective civil society. Besides advocacy, we will continue to denounce and expose undemocratic practices through our press releases in the hope that such negative exposure will be a disincentive to abuses.
