The Democracy and Human Rights Monitoring (DHRM)
project supports PICAM’s
Democracy and
Human Rights programs. It is premised on the
fact that the situation of democracy and human
rights in Cameroon remains horrendous. The
government continues to use security operatives to
harass students, human rights activists, regime
critics, civil society leaders, and political
opponents. Muzzling of the media and the arrest,
detention, and intimidation of journalists continue
unabated.
Overall,
human rights abuses
in Cameroon continue to escalate with complete
impunity.
Considering the types of abuses that continue to
pervade the Cameroonian society, it is clear that
some type of action must be taken to rectify the
situation. However, human rights violations must be
identified before they can be properly addressed.
Accordingly, the monitoring of the practice of human
rights and democracy in Cameroon is extremely
important.
The main objective of this project is to serve as a
watchdog for governmental actions by monitoring,
documenting, and publicizing the dad-to-day practice
of democracy and human rights in Cameroon, and
provide opportunities for the drafting and
presentation of alternate country reports to
international treaty bodies charged with
scrutinizing country reports on the domestic
implementation of international human rights
conventions.
This project will result in the publication of an
unbiased and comprehensive annual report. The report
will cover the period of January 1 to December 31 of
each year. A mid-year report will be published by
June 30 of each year to provide the public with
updates on the situation of democracy and human
rights in Cameroon. The final reports will be
published by the last day of February of the
subsequent year.
