The Human Rights Promotion and Protection (HRPP) project
seeks to primarily achieve the goals of our
Human Rights program. It focuses on human rights education and
defense. PICAM supports and defends all the rights enshrined in the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international
conventions and national laws.
The main aspect of the promotional element of this project
is to enhance an understanding of the principles of human rights and
contribute in the building a culture of human rights and respect for
human rights principles in Cameroon. Our promotional activities include
public education through newsletters, panels, workshops, conferences,
etc. PICAM also create awareness on human rights principles through
press releases, publications, and provision of easy access to relevant
international conventions and national legislations.
The focal point of the protection component of this project
is to condemn and protest human rights violations in a timely manner so
as to prevent abuses from escalating. We do this by denouncing and
exposing violations of human rights through press releases and other
forums. We hope that this negative publicity will act as a deterrent to
rights abuses.
In addition to publicity, in situations where individuals
have already suffered human rights abuses, PICAM documents, advocate,
and petition the authorities to investigate and bring to justice those
responsible for abuses. PICAM is also working on maintaining a Human
Rights Defense Fund to help provide access to the courts to victims of
human rights who would otherwise not be able to seek justice.
